Zusammenfassung: | With the recent implementation of general surgery residency workplace-based assessments in the form of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), understanding the reliability of competency-based assessment tools is critical. In this issue of American Journal of Surgery, Toale et al. examined the reliability of workplace-based assessments in determining operative competence using an analogous assessment tool in Ireland, the Supervised Structured Assessment of Operative Performance (SSAOP).1 They found reliable assessment of operative performance for surgical trainees is enhanced when repeated micro-assessments of commonly performed procedures are collected from multiple faculty. Program Directors, on the other hand, convey a relative neutrality regarding the impact of EPA assessments on improving training or confidence of graduating surgical trainees, questioning whether they are robust enough to be relevant and meaningful.6 This highlights the importance of confirming reliability of the tool as it is broadly implemented on a national scale. |
