Prostaglandin E2 regulation of ion transport is absent in medullary thick ascending limbs from SHR

The regulation of HCO3negative and Clnegative absorption by arginine vasopressin (AVP) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was analyzed in perfused, isolated medullary thick ascending limbs from 4-7 week old spontaneously hypertensive rats and Wistar-Kyoto rats. Results of the study indicate that, among other things, the effects of PGE2 to stimulate HCO3negative absorption and inhibit Clnegative absorption in the presence of AVP are absent in the medullary thick ascending limbs of spontaneously hypertensive rats.
