SUMMARIES PHILOLOGY E. V. Gusarova Manuscript Octateuch from IOM RAS Collection: the Heritage of Ethiopian Christians or Jews Falasha? The Octateuch (Eth. Orif) is quite a rare book in Ethiopian manuscript tradition. The reason is, first of all, its considerable size and, as a consequence, a high price of the parchment and writing material in general. Manuscripts of this class were available to big monastic centers and churches only. Therefore, the Octateuch in Ge’ez language is a unique speci men for any manuscript storage in the world. The Octateuch manuscripts used to be part of the culture and spiritual life of both Ethiopian Christians and Jews Falasha. In this study we attempted to analyze some formal distinguishing features of the Ethiopian Octateuch and, in particular, the manuscript Eth. 100 from the collection of the ЮМ RAS and tried to attribute it to one of the two Avramic traditions common in Ethiopia, namely the Christian and the Jewish. Keywords: Ethiopian manuscripts; Biblical books; Octateuch; Ethiopian Jews; Falasha. R. Marcinkowski Defence of Judaism according to Dov Ber of Bolechów The aim ofthe paper is to present the Christian-Jewish relations, and more exactly, the per ception of Jewish faith by Christians in Eastern Galicia in the 18th century as described by Dov Ber of Bolechów (1723-1805), and his response to the accusations, that is to say, his defence of Judaism to which he devoted a significant part of his work Divre bina (Under standing Words). The author of the manuscript defends the Oral Torah against the charges by emphasizing its total
reliability, which he takes for granted, while accusing other mono theistic religions, including Christianity, of irrationality and relying on false assumptions. Keywords: Dov Ber of Bolechów; memoirs; Understanding Words; Christian-Jewish relations; defence of Judaism; Jews in Eastern Galicia. N. Nikolayev, R. Ibragimov The “Jewish question” in the “Russian thought” journal in the early 20։l1 century The article analyzes the journalism ofthe early 20lh century in the popular liberal magazine “Russian thought”, dedicated to the “Jewish question”. The authors’ assessments of the Jewish question and related problems (attitude to pogroms, anti-Jewish legislation, Zion ism) are thus revealed. Keywords: “Russian thought”; journalism; magazine; the “Jewish question”; the pogroms; Zionism. A. Ahmadova Amos Oz, in search of the truth on Judas This research project aims to explore an intellectual background ofAmos Oz’s novel “Ju das” (2014) from historic-cultural perspectives. In his last novel, Amos Oz, who was a
SUMMARIES 348 prominent figure in Hebrew literature, discusses Jesus’ relationships with Judas, and si multaneously introduces facts collected by olden times’ historians on this issue. His pro tagonist Shmuel Ash conducts a research on Jewish views on Jesus for his master thesis. A desperate love affair brings him to another desperate story, where he crosses paths with two strangers: Germosh Wald, an elderly disabled intellectual, and his beloved Atalia, the widow of his son who had died in the war. The lives of these three recluses, full of ex hausting hardships and trouble depict the socio-political scene in Israel in 1948-60. Con sequently, the objective of the research focuses on the point where the novel reflects the moral voices of the heroes, their vain expectations, a human solitude in the crowd and the devastating effect of wars on human lives. Throughout the novel, Oz hermetically demon strates his political identity and brings up the issue ofthe Israeli-Palestinian conflict touching upon anti-Semitism, Zionism, the political life ofIsrael, and religious controversies between Jews, Christians and Arabs. The author’s analysis of Jewish views on Jesus culminates in the idea that the Jewish hate of Jesus is unacceptable as the Christian hate of Jews. In this sense, the paper will provide an insightful study of several aspects of Christian and Jewish faith. Discussing the concept of Jewishness, Amos Oz tries to challenge the negative views on Jews who are called God killers on Earth. The author argues that God could be killed only by a more powerful God. The
novel introduces some interesting arguments about the rebirth of Christianity as well. If there were not Judas, who helped Jesus to reveal his entire moral nature, there would be no Christianity. For Amos Oz, betrayal can be disguised as deep faith, and Judas is not a traitor, but the one who started Christianity on Earth. Research findings show that Amos Oz’s novel “Judas” aims to spread awareness ofthe problems of world war. Keywords: traitor; religion; war; God; love; Jews. V. Kirichenko In search of disappeared Jewry: a case of Georges Perec The current work addresses the problem faced by the French writer of Jewish descent, Georges Perec. This problem consists in the changing of his own identity as a result of the military and immigration events of his life. Eventually, the author begins to feel the need to search for his “disappeared Jewry”, which is closely connected with the history of his parents, with his own genealogy. The complexity of such a search and the features of its execution were reflected in the work of the French writer, which is analyzed in this article in the context of his Jewish identity. Keywords: Georges Perec; identification; memory; aesthetics of absence; autobiography; Jewry. JEWS IN SCIENCE AND ART V. V. Levchenko The canvas of the Odessa period of the life of the historian and archaeologist S. A. Semenov-Zuser The work presents a new research on the life and scientific heritage of S. A. SemenovZuser that has been published in recent years. The purpose is to draw scholarly attention to the previously unknown archival historical sources which
shed new light on the Odessa period in the life of S. A. Semenov-Zuser. The research is based on the available documents which might help carry out the “rehabilitation” of his intellectual legacy. Keywords: archeaology; history; S. A. Semenov-Zuser; Odessa; scientist; Olbia.
349 SUMMARIES A. I. Kirpichionok, A. O. Pobedonostseva Kaya Erich Brauer: a man behind Israeli Orientalistica Erich Brauer is an almost unknown figure for Russian historiography. Even in Israel it is only in recent years that the scholars have discovered the rich heritage of this scientist. As ethnologist he started his professional life by studying African tribes and then became the pioneer in studying the Jews of Yemen, Bukhara, Kurdistan and Afghanistan. Brauer was a talented graphic and it helped him to create a unique collection ofthe images of the East ern Jews. He repeatedly emphasised that not only unique costumes and rites and customs should be identified, but also the traditions common to different ethnic groups living in a specific region should be studied. Erich Brauer applied his comparative method not only to study the Jewish communities but also to compare them with their Muslim neighbours. Keywords: Erich Brauer; Israel; Bukharan Jews; Yemenite Jews; the Jews of Kurdistan; the Jews ofAfghanistan; ethnology. A. V. Anufriyev,A. V. Gimelshteyn Aircraft engineer Nikolai Kamov: the opening of a Jewish biography. Kamov family in the Irkutsk province The article addresses the history of the famous Irkutsk merchant family Kamov. The au thors, drawing on a wide range of archival sources, talk about the life and work of the Jew ish ancestors of the famous Soviet aircraft engineer Nikolai Kamov. Keywords: archive; Irkutsk; Kamov; engineer; family; synagogue. X. Xamidi, O. Tajibayeva Natan Mallaev, a famous orientalist This article discusses the life and work of a
famous scholar Nathan Mallayev. His contribu tion to the study of oriental literature and Uzbek literature has been widely acknowledged. He taught students at the institute for many years and wrote the first textbook “History of Uzbek Literature” for universities. His contribution to the study of the works of Firdousi, Nizami Ganjevi andAlisherNavai has been universally acclaimed. Keywords: Uzbek literature; studies; textbooks; prose works; folk art. E. Khazdan The legacy of Abraham Idelsohn: a perspective on the Jewish musical tradition Abraham-Zebi Idelsohn is an ethnomusicologist, composer, cantor and teacher. His name is known to every Jewish music researcher. The activity of this outstanding scholar prede termined the development of the Jewish musicology for a whole century. His writings are referred to both by his followers and those who disagree with his arguments. However, his life and the most of his legacy remain largely unexplored. This article is the first Russian-language study devoted to Idelsohn. It identifies some of the problems regarding the analysis ofthe scholar’s legacy. Musin) The paper shows the role of Belarus in personal and professional lives of a few Jewish musicians in the time before and at the beginning of WWII (1937-1941), as well as their life at the evacuation places during the Great Patriotic War and their post-war activities and productions: a Russian conductor and an outstanding teacher I.A. Musin, a jazz orchestras leader and a trumpeter, a refugee from Warsaw E. Rosner, students from the Nazi occupied Poland E. Tyrmand, Μ. Weinberg, and G. Marchuk (later — a cantor and a singer Louis Danto). Their ways to escape and the future professional work in Uzbekistan and Kyr gyzstan during the Great Patriotic War is described based on the archival documents and interviews, and the legacy of each of those Jewish musicians in the world music culture after the war is carefully systematized. Musin; jazz orchestras leader and trumpeter Eddi Rosner; composers Edi Tyrmand and Μ. Weinberg; cantor and singer Louis Danto. I. A. Meleshkina Kunst Winkel Jewish theater in Kiev in the first third of the 20 1 century The article highlights the history of the Jewish theater group Kunst Winkel, founded by the legendary actor Rudolf (Rovn-Leib) Zaslavsky in Poltava in 1919. In 1922, Kunst Win kel moved to Kiev and became the
first stationary Jewish theater in Ukraine. The theater worked on the principles of the old genre-everyday school and its repertoire was based on the Jewish classical drama. The productions of Kunst Winkel of the early 1920s are examined in detail. There are two notable examples: Der Dibbuk by S. An-sky and From Morning to Midnight by G. Kaiser directed by Axel Lundin. 351 SUMMARIES L. I. Ivonina Readmission ofJews to England: Oliver Cromwell’s position and public opinion The article analyzes the problem of the Readmission of Jews to England during Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate (1653-1658). The author set the goal to find out how the views of the Lord Protector himselfand the public opinion ofthe British influenced this process. She shows both Cromwell’s loyal attitude towards Jews and polar opinions during the discus sion of 1656 on the petition of Rabbi Ben Israel to take them as citizens under the protec tion of the English Republic. In general, although the petition was not publicly approved, theological considerations associated with Puritan views and economic motives overcame the widespread hostility to Jewish readmission. Keywords: Readmission; Jews; Oliver Cromwell; Menasseh Ben Israel; petition; Judaism; Christianity; discussion. M. S. Mulevaya The crisis of national politics in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. The phenomenon of pogroms in the provincial space This article presents a general analysis ofthe destructive trends in Russian national politics at the turn of the century. Particular attention is paid to disintegration processes in the con text ofthe policy ofRussification and segregation, which determined the vector ofnational discourse at the beginning of the 20lh century. Based on the archival materials and local newspapers of one given period, this work looks into various aspects of the phenomenon ofanti-Jewish pogrom drawing on the example of the Saratov events of 1905. The author studies the position
of the provincial official authorities, acting within the framework of imperial ideology, in building a dialogue with foreigners, Jews in particular. Keywords: national policy; multinational; disintegration processes; discourse of power; Jewish question; Anti-Jewish pogrom. E. Levin From religion to race: the changes in Russian Jewish policy and Jewish self conscience on the eve of Revolution The beginning of2O h century witnessed the gradual shift of the Russian Jewish policy and right-wing discourse from traditional religious to modern racial terms. It may be suggested that this was caused not only by the influence of current western racial theories but, primar ily, by internal Russian processes, and it reflected the gradual transformation of Jewish conscience of Russian Jewry that resulted from modernization and secularization. Keywords: anti-Semitism; conversion; secularization; identity. Μ. A. Zlatina Regarding the participation of Jews in the Special Council for Accommodation of Refugees (1915-1917) The article gives an account ofparticipation ofJewish public figures in the Special Council for Accommodation ofRefugees. SUMMARIES 352 В. В. Dubentsov, А. I. Rupasov D. I. Kopylov and his sketches “Around the belly of Petrograd” (a page from the history of the Petrograd cooperation) The article analyzes the situation in Petrograd in 1919, caused by the publication of the Decree issued by the Council of People’s Commissars on March 20, 1919 on consumer communities. In fact, the decree has accelerated the nationalization of the entire sphere of cooperative organizations, while making the problem of public control in the distribution of essential products relevant. One of the opponents of the current system was David Ko pylov, who was a member ofthe board ofthe Petrograd commune. He outlined his views on the situation in a series of essays, which were presented to the head of the Petrograd Coun cil, Grigory Zinoviev. D. I. Kopylov argued for the need not of single, but of complex mea sures to control the distribution of food and competently listed defects of nationalization of food business. It is necessary to recognize the value of the sketches for studying of the history of Petrograd cooperation and understanding of the properties of state distribution. Keywords: cooperation; civil war; Petrograd; D. I. Kopylov; organization of distribution; Petrograd council; Petrokommuna. G. N. Yakovleva Writing autobiographies by Jewish members of the RCP(b) in the period of party cleansing in 1921 in Vitebsk region as a special kind of social practice This article analyzes the autobiographical testimonies as a special kind of social practices of the people. Under the rule of the class approach in the
post-revolutionary Russian so ciety, many citizens had to create their identity anew in accordance with the necessary social criteria. This was especially evident during the party purge, when the leadership of the RCP(b) set the task to check first of all the party members’ social origins and get rid of those who wormed themselves into the party. The process of “attributing to the class” (Sh. Fitzpatrick) ofthe local Jewish Bolsheviks, who did not have the desired social origin, can be clearly traced in the autobiographies and application forms written by members of the Vitebsk provincial organization of the RCP (b) who passed through party purge. Keywords: “attribution to the class”; autobiography; party cleansing; social identity. Μ. Yu. Krapivin “ ... I hope that the speech of a non-Russian Jew will be accepted without any discontento: negotiations of the representative of the Executive Committee of the World Zionist Organization M. D. Ider with the leadership of the NKID of the RSFSR on the legalization of the Zionist movement in Russia (JanuaryFebruary 1921) The article contains a commented selection of archival materials from the funds of the People’s Commissariat for Nationalities of the RSFSR and the Central Bureau of the Jew ish Communist Sections under the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks). These newly discovered documents bear witness to the negotiations carried out by M. D. Ider who, as a representative ofthe Executive Committee of the World Zionist Organization (WZO), visited RSFSR in January-February 1921. Presumably, in the
second half of 1920, the situation of the Russian Zionists (right and center) became very difficult, in many ways - hopeless. This forced the WZO to send its emissary to Soviet Russia. This
353 SUMMARIES publication expands and refines our understanding of the progress and content ofthe negotiations which Μ. D. Ider conducted with the leadership of the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs of the RSFSR and which, unfortunately, ended in vain. I. A. Lapina Jewish students and the “proletarianization” of higher pedagogical education in the RSFSR during 1929/1930 academic year. (The example of the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute) The struggle of the Soviet government for the formation of a new, laboring intelligentsia in the 1920s and 1930s had a twofold effect on Jewish youth striving for higher education. On the one hand, children from the former Pale of Settlement had wide access to higher education, on the other hand, restrictions on admission to universities by social origin turned into severe discrimination. One of the ways to ensure the “proletarian” composition ofstudents was the notorious “purges”. The next campaigns to improve the social composi tion of students were particularly disadvantageous to Jewish families, whose main areas of employment in the Pale of Settlement were craftwork and small business. Based on the materials from the Herzen Pedagogical Institute, one of these campaigns is described, which clearly demonstrates the
inconsistency of the policy of the Soviet state in the field of education, and the preservation of tension in the field of ethno-national relations during the “cultural revolution”. Keywords: People’s Commissariat for Education; Herzen State Pedagogical Institute in Leningrad; teacher education; sovietization; proletarianization, universal education plan; educational policy; ethno-national relations; “cultural revolution”. T. Μ. Smirnova Jewish Autonomous Region. A glance from overseas Three archival documents are published from the Archives ofNew Acts in Warsaw, reveal ing some aspects of the organization of resettlement of Jews from abroad to the Jewish Autonomous Region ofthe USSR. The article shows the formation ofthe Ambidjan and the ambiguous attitude towards the Birobidzhan project on the part ofPolish diplomatic circles and American Jewish public, as well as the degree to which their ideas are consistent with the real situation in the Jewish Autonomous Region. Keywords: American Committee for the Settlement of Jews in Birobidjan (Ambidjan); the Jewish Autonomous Region; OZET; KomZET; Organization for Jewish Colonization in Russia (ICOR); «The Birobidzhan project»; relocation policy, Jewish population. E. A. Solodovnikova Holocaust in Vinnytsia Region during Nazi Occupation (1941-1944) This paper considers several aspects of the Holocaust policy in Vinnytsia, as conducted by the German and Romanian occupants: ( 1 ) how exactly the life ofJews in ghetto was organ ized and where exactly the Jews were held before annihilation; (2) the similarities and the
SUMMARIES 354 differences between German and Romanian practices of annihilation of the Jews; (3) how the transportation between ghetto and annihilation sites was organized; and (4) which were the differences between the annihilation of Jews in the USSR and that in the occupied territories in the West. The cases aim to show the ways of interaction between Jews and occupants as well as between Jews and locals. Keywords: Holocaust; Jews; World War II; occupation; Ukraine; everyday life; Soviet Union. I. V. Masyukova Legislative regulation of Jewish emigration from the USSR (1960-1990’s) During many years the emigration policy of Soviet leadership was inconsequent and para doxical. The main reason of Jewish emigration from the USSR to Israel according to State authority was so-called “reunification of families”. After the Six Day War (1967) the dip lomatic relations were broken, the emigration was stopped for some time, however soon, in 1968, 1500 people were granted exit visas to Israel. The Emigration Laws in 1970’s restricted departure from the country and increased the number of so-called “Refuseniks”. When Μ. S. Gorbachev came to power, the new period began in the development of the country; all bans on emigration were lifted and it became more civilized. Keywords: Jewish emigration; reunification of families; the Six Day War; Emigration Laws; “Refuseniks”; Gorbachev’s policy. HISTORY OF JEWISH COMMUNITIES S. A. Frantsouzoff The Jews in power in medieval South Yemen and their conflict with the Islamic society In medieval South Yemen, first of all in Aden under the
dynasty of the Rasūlids, some members of the local Jewish community had got high positions, most often in the financial department. Their promotion was provoking the irritation of the crowd and of its leaders represented by Şûfî sheikhs. At the instigation of one of them, viz. Sufyan b. ‘Abdallah al-Abyanī, who was living in the 13th century A. D., at least two Jews, one in Aden and the other in Ta‘izz, were killed. The data about those incidents are preserved in the works of Yemenite Islamic hagiography composed by al-Yāfi‘ī, al-Shardjī, al-Burayhľ and alȚayyib Bā Makhrama. In all probability, the fate of a Jew, who at the turn of the 15։M6lh centuries A.D. became a semi-independent ruler in the village of Bayhan, proved to be less dramatic, since the local Jewish community at that period was equated in status to members ofArab tribes enjoying full rights (al֊Qabā H), especially the right to carry weapons. Keywords: the Jews in South Yemen; status of the Jews in Islam; the Jews-officials in medieval Aden; Şüfîs and anti-Semitism; special position of the Jews in Habban, Bayhan and neighboring areas. A. A. Boltaevskii The Jewish community in Suriname: features of formation (17th-18։l1 centuries) In the history of the development of South America, Jews played an important role in a variety of ways: in Suriname, their influential community became one of the organizers of plantation economy, which earned the Dutch colony the reputation of one of the richest in
355 SUMMARIES the New World. The paper shows that biased views about the situation of slaves on Jewish plantations are largely due to the stereotypes perpetuated by the authors. Keywords: Sephardic Jews; Suriname; slavery; plantation economy. S.A. Ivanyuk The life of the Jewish community of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the initial phase of the Great Northern War (1700-1709): interaction with the warring armies In the early years of the Great Northern War (1701-1709), large areas of the Polish-Lithu anian Commonwealth were occupied by this large-scale military conflict. During the “small war” waged by the warring armies (Russia, Saxony, Sweden), moving around the war zones in search of a convenient time for a general battle, the most vulnerable and most affected by the hostilities was the civilian population. A significant part of this population was made up by a large Jewish community living at that time in Poland and Lithuania. During this period, the Jewish community, along with other civilians in the country, expe rienced all the difficulties of life in the war. Keywords: Jews; Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; 18th century; Great Northern War; Charles XII; Peter the Great; August II the Strong. E. A. Bruhanchik The influence of Jews on the formation and development of the credit and financial system in the Belarusian provinces (1861-1914): approaches of the Belarusian historiography of the post-Soviet period The article is concerned with the approaches that have been adopted by Belarusian his torians exploring the role of the Jews in the formation and
development of the credit and financial system in the Belarusian provinces in the second half of the 19,h - early 20lh cen turies, during which time they were setting up bank offices (houses), interest-free loan offices and first local capitalist banks. The study also revises the publications addressing banks which credited industries and trades in the Belarusian provinces, and their charitable activities. The article also lists publications about daily life of Jewish bankers. The author notes a small number ofpublications about the participation ofJews in improving the bank ing sector of Belarus and explains the reasons for this phenomenon (fragmented archival funds, lack of research on the history of credit in Belarus, and specificity of banking in the Belarusian provinces). Keywords: credit and financial system; Belarusian historiography; Jewish bankers; bank offices; interest-free loan offices. K. G. Karpekin Mikvot of Belarusian provinces in the late 19 11 - early 20*h century Drawing extensively upon documents from provincial construction departments stored at the National historical archives of Belarus, the article traces the history of the Belarusian provincial mikvot in the late I9Ih - early 20љ century. The study identifies the reasons for the construction and repair of buildings, highlights the main stages of construction work, reveals the attitude of Jewish population and local authorities to the mikvah and describes the distinctive architectural features of the buildings. The period under study
SUMMARIES 356 can be considered quite favorable for the construction of new churches and the restoration of destroyed buildings. Despite certain obstacles on the part of the local authorities, some intra-communal and inter-confessional conflicts, the majority ofJewish communities man aged to obtain permission for the necessary construction work. In practice it had developed a clear algorithm of actions, following which the believers had all the chances to succeed. For the same period, several architectural types ofbuildings are attested that stand out flom the general development of cities and towns. Keywords: architecture; Belarusian provinces; mikva; public bath; repair; construction Department of the provincial government; construction. B. A. Alimdjanov The role of Jewish merchants in the economy of Russian Turkestan The article discusses the activities ofBukhara Jews in the Turkestan General Governorate. The main actors in the economy ofTurkestan were the “national” groups of merchants who controlled the entire economic life of the region. On the eve of the conquest of Turkestan by Russian troops, Bukhara Jews and the so-called “Sarts” merchants played a significant role in international and domestic trade in the khanates. In fact, all international trade ofthe khanates was in the hands of intermediaries — Bukhara Jews. With the advent ofRussians to the region, it was them who intensified their activities in the newly created Turkestan and tried to take all the threads of the economy into their own hands. The main emphasis is placed on the activities of Jewish firms
and trading houses and their role in the Central Asian economy. Archival documents detailing the trading operations of the Jewish firms and trading houses in Russian Turkestan are first presented to scholarly attention. Keywords: Turkestan; Central Asia; Bukhara Jews; trading companies; trade; capital. E. A. Dadashov, F. A. Aghaev The role of the Jewish community in the social and cultural life of Baku in the second half of the 19љ - early 20th centuries The article explains the role of representatives of the Jewish intelligentsia in the social and cultural life ofthe city ofBaku in the late 19th - early 20“’ centuries. Yevsey Gindes, a prom inent pediatrician, Samuel Krause, an ophthalmologist, and Yakov Calais, a talented sculp tor have left an indelible mark in the history of healthcare and culture. The authors disclose in detail the biographies and practical activities of these historical figures in originating and developing of a completely new and advanced knowledge on a local scale. Particular attention is drawn to the fact that, during this period, Jews as an ethnic group enjoyed in Baku a generally favorable situation, which was the main reason for a vast majority ofJews to move to Baku stay there forever. Keywords: Baku; pediatrics; Yevsey Gindes; ophthalmology; Samuel Krause; sculptor; Yakov Calais. E. G. Pevzner About the activity of children’s summer colonies under the patronage of the Society for the Spreading of Enlightenment among Jews in Russia (OPE) The Society for the Spreading ofEnlightenment among Jews in Russia (OPE) not only pro moted education of
children, but took care of their health as well. Jewish population lived
357 SUMMARIES for the most part vety poorly. Children suffered especially from unsanitary conditions, were underfed, anemic and cachectic. St. Petersburg, Odessa, Riga and Baku departments of the OPE organized summer colonies for pupils. Doctors selected children for colonies and sent there the most weakened, who suffered from severe anemia. The age of the colo nists was between 6 and 15 years, they were mainly pupils. Children attended the colonies in 2 terms. While attending the colony, the children spend a lot of time in the open air, ate well, got sea-water baths and swam in the sea. They cleaned up the facilities, helped out in the kitchen and worked in the garden. The cultural-educational program was organized for them: the children played games, were engaged in manual labour, went on excursions and read. The colony stuff organized concerts and celebrations for the children. Attending the colonies had a beneficial effect on the children: they grew up, put on weight, their health improved. Therefore, the OPE did not only educate children, it contributed to the improve ment of their health. Keywords: Summer colony; anemia; emaciation; supplemental nutrition; open air; sea baths. I. N. Litvinova The role of public Jewish organizations in the development of socio-cultural life of the national community and cities of the Lower Volga region in the early 20th century The article analyzes the problem of consolidation of the Jewish community through the activities of ethnic public organizations in the lower Volga cities in the early 2O h century. Special attention is paid to
the work ofmutual aid societies, which united people on a pro fessional basis, to the organizations that helped Jewish refugees who wound up in faraway cities during the World War in comparison with the initiatives of the modem non-profit organisations in Volgograd and Saratov. This research looks into practices of Jewish or ganizations and categorizes the present-day beneficiaries and those of the last century. Keywords: Jewish community; prayer society; Jewish education; social protection; assistance, organizations, social programs. E. lakimova The impact of the European refugee crisis on the Jewish community of Germany The article analyses the influence of the migration crisis on the German Jewish commu nity. The author examines internal political disputes of coalition and opposition parties with the special emphasis on the activity of the “Alternative for Germany” party, Israel’s government position in relation to the growth of anti-Semitism in Europe amid the influx of immigrants from the East, as well as the approach of Jewish community organizations to the issue. E.g. the anti-Semitic attacks in Halle and Hemmingen in 2019 have indicated the main current threats to the Jewish population of Germany. Keywords: Germany; Israel; Jewish community; refugee crisis; anti-Semitism. V. Korochkina Israeli estimates of the current emigration wave from Russia to the Jewish State In the Hebrew-language Israeli mass media one can come across publications which can raise questions among Russian citizens who live in the country or Russian-speaking Israe lis. The Israeli daily
business newspaper and website Calcalist, specializing in economic
SUMMARIES 358 and law issues, published an article entitled “From Russia in panic: the economic elite flees from Putin to Israel”. The discourse of the article is that in our country the policy of Putin’s authoritarian regime reduces possibilities for the remaining businessmen, among whom, despite the massive repatriation of Jews in the 1990s, there are still many of those with Jewish ancestry. Nowadays, according to the author of the article, they are mostly anti-putinists who have accounted for a phenomenon of “Putin’s aliyah”. Meanwhile, it is noted that today’s socio-economic considerations are drivers ofthe “flow” of wealthy Jews from Russia to Israel, and in the opposite direction. Keywords: Israeli mass media; Jews; Aliyah; repatriates; Putin; businessmen; Israel; Russia. Μ. Irmeche Jewish Identity Crisis in Israeli Society This paper examines the problems related to the Jewish Israeli Identity agenda and the vectors of its realization. The author identifies two major internal factors that de termine the formation of a Jewish Israeli identity: I) religiosity and, more specifically, the pluralistic nature of Judaism and the relation of State and religion and 2) cultural diversity which reflects the multiethnic character of the Israeli society. The author concludes that the nation-building process in Israel is far from completed, while confessional and ethnic cleavages are only increasing. Keywords: Jewish identity; Israeli identity; identity crisis; Israeli nation
building; religion and state relations; religious secular divide; Jewish ethnicity; Ashkinazi mizrahi cleavage; Russian Jews in Israel.
