Leyland cypress is a fast growing coniferous evergreen hybrid. Thanks to its monocormic beautiful habit, its dense green crown tolerating also intense pruning, its adaptability to severe climatic and edaphic conditions, its good tolerance to frost, pollution, salt sprays and marine aerosols, Leyland cypress has been very widely grown in the last decades as ornamental in parks and gardens and particularly to make barriers, windbreaks, hedges, as shelter tree for private estates, as Christmas tree and also for wood production in some countries, even if it has not been planted much for forestry purposes. Leyland cypress has become the common tree in UK urban areas. A recent survey revealed that more than 20% of all urban trees in England are Leyland cypresses.
