Two benzene rings, lying on different sides of the diethyl 2‐butenedioate main chain, are almost parallel to each other and nearly perpendicular to the main chain. In the unit cell, two symmetry‐equivalent mol­ecules are in general positions and two mol­ecules lie on inversion centres.
