Zusammenfassung:This chapter provides the basic characteristics, side effects/toxicity, drug interactions, and dosage information of the Unasyn (Ampicillin Sodium‐Sulbactam Sodium). Unasyn binds penicillin‐binding protein (PBP), disrupting cell wall synthesis. The PBP can be altered, with reduced affinity. Decreased ability of the antibiotic to reach the PBP when bacteria decrease porin production, resulting in a decrease of the drug concentration within the cell. Ampicillin sulbactam is indicated in the treatment of infections due to susceptible strains of microorganisms in the conditions listed below: skin and skin structure infections, intra‐abdominal infections, and gynecological infections. Concurrent use of ampicillin/sulbactam and probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of ampicillin/sulbactam. Ampicillin—sulbactam needs to be dose adjusted for renal dysfunction. The recommended daily dose is 75 mg per kg every 6 hours. Pediatric patients weighing 40 kg or more should be dosed according to adult recommendations.
