Art and Social Movements

Art and protest are distinct activities that belong to distinct social spheres, but they share many similarities and often intersect. Relying on a large set of empirical cases taken from different countries and historical periods, the chapter focuses on the various ways art and aesthetics inform or permeate protest action: contention within artistic fields and the mobilization of artistic movements, artists’ commitment to movements, the aestheticization of protest and the politicization of art works, and the mobilization of art as a resource for movements.
