Zusammenfassung:Research connects organized sport participation with greater psychological and social benefits in youth athletes. In order to best promote these positive outcomes, youth sport programs must be active in their implementation of effective models that promote positive youth development. This study explored the implementation of the Five C’s model in a youth academy soccer program. This longitudinal study explored the perceptions of youth athletes and members of their ecological system (e.g., coaches and parents). Using a mixed method approach, 145 youth athletes, 128 parents, and 23 coaches responded to surveys and/or participated in focus groups. Survey results indicate the implementation of the Five C’s led to more opportunities for positive development among youth athletes, an increase in the positive affects youth athletes experienced throughout the program, an increase in parental support of the academy, and a shift in coaching philosophies that promote the Five C’s. Together these results indicate change can be made when youth sport organizations implement positive youth development models. Additionally, these models could serve as a foundation for improving a long-lasting commitment to youth sport.
