Much attention has been given in recent years to the social creation of communities and the founding of early villages in the northern American Southwest (e.g., Hegmon 2002; Isbell 2000; Kohler and Varien 2012; Kolb and Snead 1997; Varien and Potter 2008a; Wilshusen, Ortman, and Phillips 2012). This section of the volume, dedicated to social units, is an ideal venue in which to explore ideas of how communities were constructed in the early Pueblo periods and what relations may have existed among the constituent groups or “units” of early villages or communities.
