The Art of Alvin Hollingsworth

Alvin Hollingsworth (1928–2000) was a talented artist who worked in the comic book industry in the 1940s and 1950s before becoming a painter and a professor. One of the few Black creators to work in comics prior to the civil rights movement, Hollingsworth’s career is especially notable in how he shifted from drawing comic books to using art for civic engagement. In 1963, he was part of the art collective Spiral, and by the 1970s, he taught art as a professor at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York in the South Bronx. His work within
