Zusammenfassung: | The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and its Companion Volume (CEFR-CV) provide a rich resource for teachers to align their teaching horizontally in terms of communicative activities, strategies and competences. However, if practitioners wish to refine the reference levels vertically in terms of further subdivisions for specific classroom purposes, they have to rely heavily on their intuition. In this chapter, I present a practical approach to this problem in the context of a university language programme: local reference points, i.e. empirically supported benchmarks intended to help teachers refine progression in a coherent way.
