Collaborative and Participatory Research for Plurilingual Language Learning

In Barcelona, as in many cosmopolitan cities, the school population is highly linguistically and culturally diverse, especially in certain neighbourhoods. Schools teach Catalan and Spanish (official languages in Catalonia) and one or two European languages, mainly English. At some schools, pupils’ heritage languages are also taught, but, until the new provisions of 2019, outside the scheduled class time. Although the educational authorities consider, as reflected in official documents, that the linguistic heritage of students is an asset to be valued, teachers generally proscribe the use of diverse languages in the classroom.
