Zusammenfassung:The present invention relates generally to the field of guidewires and, more specifically, to the field of pressure-sensing guidewires used in intravascular procedures. Still more specifically, the present invention relates to a system and method for extending the length of pressure-sensing guidewires during intravascular procedures. An extension system for a pressure-sensing guidewire is disclosed. The guidewire includes an elongated tubular member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending between the proximal and distal ends. The guidewire also includes at least one opening disposed adjacent the distal end of the tubular member for providing fluid communication to the lumen. The system also includes an elongated extension member that is detachably connected to the proximal end of the tubular member. The system enables a catheter to be inserted over a pressure-sensing guidewire without removing the pressure-sensing guidewire from a patient.
