This invention is in the field of plant molecular biology. More specifically, this invention pertains to nucleic acid fragments encoding a novel tryptophan synthase beta subunit in plants and seeds. This invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding a plant tryptophan synthase beta subunit. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a substantial portion of the plant tryptophan synthase beta subunit, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the plant tryptophan synthase beta subunit in a transformed host cell.
