A process for the preparation of an enantiomerically pure tertiary -hydroxycarboxylic acid or its ester, wherein an enantiomer mixture of compounds is brought into contact with an enzyme, which is capable of the hydrolytic cleavage of an ester bond, in an aqueous medium such that one enantiomer of the enantiomer mixture is hydrolyzed.
