Rise Complexity Workshop (within Rob Law Exhibition): Workshop, collaborating with Lisa Carlgren, Rise

Rise Complexity Workshop (within Rob Law Exhibition) was a one-day workshop with a team from the Rise organization and collaborating with researcher, Lisa Carlgren. The workshop was held at the ICIA Konsthall and utilizing, as a workshop technique, the Rob Law Exhibition of STUDIO ALIGHT. By the end of the workshop, the participants had filmed, edited and debuted short films that unlocked ideas of how might the organization take on working through complexity in effective, inspirational and useful ways. The workshop content and aim were threefold: 1) inspiring the participants to take their frustrations of working in a complex (and merging conglomerate of an) organization, 2) presenting the research done by previous works of collaborator, Lisa Carlgren and 3) creating a context for discussion on complex issues in our society. Reflection on experimentation of the Workshop Design: The workshop design started off as a more regular service-design type workshop design for a small group of people within an organization representing diverse parts of said organization. The type of workshop where the main result is to create connection across the normal siloed project teams and departments. Yet, even so, in this workshop more experimentation was allowed to come to fruition. Hence, the following few paragraphs will describe these fruitions. First, the location of the workshop was taken out of the normal walls owned by the organization and placed within an exhibition context. Hence, the exhibition (and the situation of this workshop where I, personally, held a dual role as both artist and workshop facilitator) was a backdrop to the discussions about complexity. Yet, also, not only was the context of the Konsthall important to the results of this workshop but also the context of its neighborhood played a part, which even included a local lunch spot. The artwork within the exhibition highlighted this and the artwork showed to evoke a deep discussion within the participants. Participants also reflected in the end discussion that the exhibition played an inspirational role for them to dig deeper into the work they had on their desk of uncovering ways of working through complexity at their organization. As an added bonus, the Konsthall provided also a workshop space for which many of the participants took advantage. Secondly, the material choices were experimented upon in this session.
