Serum concentrations of the axonal injury marker neurofilament light protein are not influenced by blood-brain barrier permeability

Highlights • Serum NFL increases following both cranial irradiation (CIR) and anesthesia in mice. • Serum NFL does not correlate with opening of the blood-brain barrier after CIR. • In humans, the levels of NFL in serum mirror the levels in cerebrospinal fluid.
