Zusammenfassung:Since the "Presidential Address", which Michael Burawoy held on the occasion of his election as President of the American Sociological Association in 2004, the slogan of a "Public Sociology" in sociology, which has become his trademark, has gained considerable prominence. Fast and lasting there were international resonances with numerous events and publications, which arrived with some time delay also in this country. In 2012, the board of the German Sociological Association praised its own event format entitled "DGS goes public" with recourse to Burawoy (Lessenich and Neckel 2012). And in 2015, the applicants for further funding of the Jena Kolleg "Post-Growth Societies" (2015) by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft were successful in raising the concept of a "public sociology" to the rank of "metathema" for their program.
