Approaches to User Interface Development

This paper discusses problems associated with modern user interfaces, analyzes interfaces built on the implementation paradigm, identifies the weaknesses of this paradigm, estimates some existing methodologies for interface development, and justifies the use of metaphoric or idiomatic methodologies when creating or improving user interfaces. At an annual meeting, Kenneth Olsen, an engineer, co-founder, and head of Digital Equipment Corp., admitted that he did not know how to make coffee with the company’s microwave.
