Zusammenfassung:The presentation, which is tutorial in nature, deals with direct detection of noncoherent optical signals. The results are applied to the analysis of optical communication systems using on-off modulation. The detection situation studied contains optical noise, which exhibits Poisson statistics, together with Gaussian thermal noise. Bounds on and approximations of the detection probabilites for the sum of Poisson and Gaussian stochastic variables are presented and compared with the exact values. The ordinary Chernoff bounds are not tight in this case in contrast to so-called improved Chernoff bounds which are shown to give better accuracy. A convenient way to estimate the detection probabilities is with a saddlepoint approximation which turns out to be accurate to within a few tenths of a percent. It is shown that system performance can be evaluated with satisfactory accuracy by approximating the compound distribution with either a Poisson or a Gaussian distribution.
