Pesantren-based environmental management in equatorial areas

This study aimed to determine the environmental management in the equatorial area based on Pondok Pesantren Hidayatullah Balikpapan as a case study. This research used eco-pesantren theory, especially in the aspects of the development policy of the pesantren and the development policy for environment-based extracurricular activities. The method used was a qualitative research method with data collection through field observation, documentation, literature study, and interviews. This research concluded that development policy for environmental management undertaken in Pondok Pesantren Hidayatullah Balikpapan, which is at the equator line, was to make an artificial environment and reforestation approach accomplished by the existence of an artificial lake and protected forest. Secondly, the policy of pesantren is participative by making santri as relief teams (satgas) for overcoming environmental disaster around the pesantren.
