Zusammenfassung:Previous estimates of the tensile strengths of various liquids, based on the hole theory, were much higher than empirical values. It is pointed out that these estimates did not take account of the pressure gradients which exist under typical experimental conditions. Such gradients will cause holes to drift and accumulate leading to much lower theoretical tensile strengths.
