Focusing on two of the most violent periods (the 16th century and the 19th century), understood respectively as the Spanish conquest and the Chilean conquest, the possession and use of rifles by southern warriors is considered as a factor within the dynamics of the frontier and also within power relations. In this way, its value can be glimpsed in forms of exchange, the construction of prestige, inclusion in ritual and belief systems, in other words, dimensions that show that processes of technological adoption and adaptation are equally political and cultural. Buscando vulnerar estas representaciones imprecisas, anhelando romper con las ideas que bosquejaron una imagen del guerrero mapuche como indefectiblemente resistente al cambio y, especialmente considerando la utilidad y la necesidad de indagar en la participación de los sujetos históricos en una cultura guerrera abierta, cuando no compartida, nos parece fundamental recorrer documental y reflexivamente la relación entre los guerreros mapuche y las armas de fuego.
