Design of a molten slag waste disposal facility to meet NEMA and NEM:WA requirements : legal and management

SLR Consulting (Africa) (Pty) Ltd was appointed to design a waste disposal facility (WDF) catering for molten slag. Th e design of the mineralised WDF informed the EIA application process and the design report was prepared as a specialist report in terms of Appendix 6 of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) No 107 of 1998. Th is NEMA appendix sets out the requirements for specialist reports, including, inter alia, a description of the methodology adopted in preparing the report, any assumptions made (including uncertainties or gaps in know ledge) and a reasoned opinion as to whether the proposed activity should be authorised. Th is article presents a summary of the design in relation to legislative requirements.
