Workload distribution within a research orientated University department

In addressing the workload distribution within a research orientated university department this article outlines irreconcilabilities in the financing of universities and discusses the teaching-research anomaly. Attention is then paid to academic staff appraisal at tertiary institutions and to lecturer-student ratios. The development of formula for workload distribution is outlined in terms of personnel requirements in a university department and pre-conditions for the acceptance of a workload distribution formula. Finally, pre-conditions for the acceptance of a workload distribution formula are given, together with guidelines for the weighting of the different components of the formula.
