Then industrialization of an indigenous people

The introduction of an industrial economy into South Africa is examined as a process of acculturation. Account is taken of the differential impact and penetration of this process among the major social groups. The agents of culture contact and their roles are defined. The patterns of work interaction which evolved are evaluated as determinants in the industrialization of the indigenous people. The reactions and expectations of this labour force are examined. Industrial work is defined. This definition restricts its application to a limited range of industrial and commercial undertakings. A sample industrial population is discussed with reference to exposure to industrial work; their verbal conformity to industrial work norms; their industrial behaviour both in the past and the present time.
