The synthesis of 3-trinitromethyl-5-nitramino-1 H -1,2,4-triazole ( 1 ) is described. This triazole is a powerful energetic compound due to its high nitrogen- and oxygen-content. Selected nitrogen-rich salts were also prepared in order to tune the performance and sensitivity values. The compounds are characterised by vibrational and NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The structure of 1 was determined by X-ray diffraction. The sensitivities were measured according to BAM standards and energetic performances calculated by EXPLO5 6.03. An oxygen- and nitrogen-rich energetic triazole as an excellent example with outstanding performance but high sensitivity, which can be adjusted by the formation of nitrogen-rich salts.
