Denitration of hydrazinium nitroformate to form hydrazinium dinitromethanide

Thermally unstable hydrazinium dinitromethanide was synthesized by denitration of hydrazinium nitroformate with hydrazine hydrate and fully characterized using IR, Raman and multinuclear ( 1 H, 13 C, 15 N) NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as thermal, impact and friction stability measurements. The new energetic salt of hydrazinium dinitromethanide was obtained by reacting hydrazinium nitroformate and hydrazine hydrate, which causes the reductive denitration of the nitroformate anion to dinitromethanide.
