Zusammenfassung:•Similarity of COVID-19 symptoms with influenza-like illness pose a risk for unrecognized SARS-CoV-2 infections.•The presence of undetected SARS-CoV-2 cases in local population prior to index case was investigated.•We observed a symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 positive patient in the prepandemic period in northern Cyprus.•Extensive testing at early stages of a pandemic is crucial for preventing viral community transmission.
