We place the reasons for vaccine hesitancy and refusal into three categories: fears that the vaccines are not safe, misinformed ideas, and agreement with conspiracy theories. Evidence-based approaches are available that account for the psychological factors underlying vaccine hesitancy and refusal that should form the basis for counteracting facts and persuasion.
