The capacity to adapt from nutrient-rich to nutrient-poor environments led to the appearance of protein complexes regulating anabolic and catabolic pathways. The evolutionarily conserved kinase mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) emerged as a crucial and central protein for regulating many different cellular functions in response to environmental changes.
