Poor, persecuted, young, and alone: Toward explaining the elevated risk of alcohol problems among Black and Latino men who drink

Highlights • We pooled national surveys to examine racial/ethnic disparities in alcohol problems. • Certain subgroups experienced greater problems even where drinking was equivalent. • Such groups included the poor, young, unmarried, and those experiencing prejudice. • The above differences helped explain Black-White and Latino-White disparities. • We must recognize potential for problems in these groups even with low consumption.
