Participatory approach to the development of a knowledge base for problem-solving in diabetes self-management

Highlights • We developed an expandable knowledge base of reusable knowledge for self-management of diabetes. • Knowledge base can be used as a foundation for patient-centric decision support tools. • Knowledge base incorporates diabetes self-management practice-based knowledge, clinical practice recommendations, and theory. • Knowledge base was validated with individuals living with diabetes and practicing, community-based diabetes educators. • Knowledge base development approach can be applied to chronic diseases requiring enhanced patient self-management.
