A novel way to prevent tension pneumothorax

The bullet had entered his right chest, just over the middle lobe of the lung, and had exited from his upper back, causing him to lose a substantial volume of blood and much of his scapula. The upper lobe had been removed (while he was given an arterial blood transfusion), and an attempt had been made to close the exit wound produced by the bullet, but it was evident that this had not been successful.
