Postnatal development of eupneic ventilation and metabolism in rats chronically exposed to moderate hyperoxia

Highlights • Newborn rats reared in hyperoxia hypoventilate shortly after return to normoxia. • Smaller hyperoxic ventilatory responses suggest reduced carotid body contribution. • Respiratory burst frequency is also slower in brainstem-spinal cord preparations. • The decreased minute ventilation ca...

Zusammenfassung:Highlights • Newborn rats reared in hyperoxia hypoventilate shortly after return to normoxia. • Smaller hyperoxic ventilatory responses suggest reduced carotid body contribution. • Respiratory burst frequency is also slower in brainstem-spinal cord preparations. • The decreased minute ventilation cannot be explained by decreased metabolic rate. • Diminished metabolic rates appear to be regulated, akin to hypoxic hypometabolism.
