The association of syphilis with hepatic cirrhosis: a report of six cases and a review of the literature

Among forty-nine patients with cirrhosis admitted to the Bristol Royal Infirmary in the years between 1962 and 1967 inclusive, six cases were found who also had syphilis. The possible significance of this association is discussed and a short review of the literature presented. The importance of routine serological testing for syphilis on all cirrhotic patients, particularly male, is stressed.
