Richard Goldschmidt and the crossing-over controversy

One of the basic tenets linking the Mendelian laws to the chromosomal theory of heredity was the assumption of "crossing over," but in 1917 Richard Goldschmidt directly challenged the mechanistic interpretation of crossing over. He did not deny that crossing over or genetic recombination took place; rather, he questioned the chiasmatype hypothesis.
