Zusammenfassung: | Studies of the effect of parenteral nutrition and elemental diets on cancer patients are discussed. Because radiation therapy to the head and neck area results in loss of taste, dry mouth, stomatitis, and consequent anorexia, it is difficult to prepare food for people who have undergone this treatment. Certain foods should be avoided and meat and vegetables should be moistened with gravies and sauces. Liquid supplements and small frequent feedings are better accepted by patients. Suggestions are given for patients who receive irradiation to the pelvis and abdomen. Regimens for chemotherapy patients are suggested. Commercial dietary supplements are available. Vitamins and minerals should be found in a properly planned diet but if the patient is unable to ingest a normal diet, a preparation of B complex and C vitamins is recommended. |
