Zusammenfassung:Recent advances in microfluidic technology have made it possible to image live bacterial cells with a high degree of precision and control. In particular, single-cell microfluidic designs have created new opportunities to study phenotypic variation in bacterial populations. However, the development and use of microfluidic devices require specialized resources, and these can be practical barriers to entry for microbiologists. With this review, our intentions are to help demystify the design, construction, and application of microfluidics. Our approach is to present design elements as building blocks from which a multitude of microfluidics applications can be imagined by the microbiologist.
