Bieber led UAW during turbulent 1980s, 1990s; Former president, who helped establish Jobs Bank, dead at 90

During his tenure, which began in 1983, the UAW won expanded health care coverage, but its membership fell rapidly as General Motors, Ford and Chrysler lost market share and closed plants. Under the Jobs Bank, negotiated during 1984 labor talks with GM, laid-off UAW members at the Detroit 3 received the bulk of their pay and benefits despite plant closings. A lifelong progressive champion of social justice, Bieber and other labor leaders were arrested in 1984 during an anti-apartheid demonstration outside of the South African Embassy in Washington.
