The German economy

German monetary policymakers can look back on a successful 1996, in terms of their monetary objectives. However, the German economic situation was overshadowed by intractable employment problems, which increased in severity despite improvements in the overall economic environment. For the Bundesbank, with the approach of the transition to European monetary union, the preparatory work necessary to this end has become an even greater focus of interest in practically all areas.
