Why I am an industrial engineer

In the morning, I have spent years fine-turning the sequence of steps that follows the ringing of the alarm clock to economize motion and ensure redundancy as I shower, shave, brush my teeth, eat my cereal and rush off to work. Work measurement, statistical process control, kanban, SMED (singleminute exchange of dies), ANOVA (analysis of variance), design of experiments, Taguchi arrays, robust design, fishbone diagrams, neural networks, lean Six Sigma, agile, simulation and linear optimization are all about creating a system to describe the world around us.
