The safe maintenance of underground railway track

Track geometry measurements are used to determine the track condition to ensure that the safe geometry tolerances of the track classifications are met. Hence work places are identified along the track that requires realignment by tamping. On surface railroads, track geometry measurements are usually made through a self-propelled track geometry recording car. Various railroads have different standards for the various measurements and the frequency to running these track-recording cars.
