Small miracles

Rexer presents photographs of Christmas Pageant reenactments taken in Southern Italy. These "Presepi viventi" were enacted long ago in other parts of Italy, but they grew up in the far south only in the 1970s, in response to economic and cultural changes that were wiping out native, mostly rural, traditions, as a means of expressing religiosity outside church authority and enshrining community practices.
