Despite some Americans' fears that the nursing shortage is affecting care in the hospital, inpatients are not hiring private-duty nurses en masse. A reason: expense, says Justine Medina, clinical practice director for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Private-duty nurses cost up to $65 per hour - a steep price for someone who might end up simply holding a patient's hand.
