James P. Allison, chair of immunology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Tasuku Honjo, a professor of medicine at Kyoto University, in Japan, shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their "discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation." Frances H. Arnold, a professor of chemical engineering, bioengineering and biochemistry and director of the Donna and Benjamin M. Rosen Bioengineering Center at the California Institute of Technology; George P. Smith, a professor emeritus of biological sciences at the University of Missouri at Columbia; and Sir Gregory P. Winter, research leader emeritus at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, in England, shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Arthur Ashkin, a former researcher at Bell Laboratories; Gérard Mourou, a professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; and Donna Strickland, an associate professor of physics at the University of Waterloo, in Canada, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for their inventions in the field of laser physics.
