Survey on open access situation at National Institute for Environmental Studies

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) is Japan’s research institute and conduct broad-based research that covers the environmental science field. Toward the establishment of the system for promoting open science at NIES, We conducted a survey of open access activities at NIES researchers. We determine the percentage of open access articles and estimate the costs of APCs (Article processing charge). As a result of comparing FY2011 and FY2016, we found the following; Both FY2011 and FY2016, 70% of the articles are published in open access. And, despite APCs for hybrid open access journals were significantly more expensive than these of fully open access journals, the number of APCs paid increased.
