Strikes in the third quarter helped pitch Alitalia into an operating loss and pushed its net debt beyond the 1 billion euro mark. And with confusion persisting over whether management or the unions control the Italian airline, even trying to asses potential merger synergies between Alitalia and Air France-KLM looks premature.
