Zusammenfassung: | Ceramics manufacturers are facing challenges such as high energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and the public perception of industrial operations. Many have found that a nearby landfill can provide some relief. Current waste management practices produce a byproduct, landfill gas (LFG), which is a valuable, lower-cost energy source. The collection and control of LFG also leads to significant reductions in GHG emissions. With concerns over climate change, a growing market for GHG emission offsets is emerging. Landfills are poised to bring these GHG offsets to market, resulting in additional incentives for the collection and use of LFG. The basic principles of LFG are explained, and its use as a GHG emission offset and as an energy source in the ceramics industry is considered. The potential environmental benefits are shown. |
