The FBI and Library Spying: A World War II Precedent
The FBI's attempts to have libraries report on the reading habits of patrons suspected of being foreign agents can be traced back to the policies of J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover's efforts and the decision to honor library policy of confidentiality are discussed.
